What They Actually Do
A monitoring smart plug measures real-time and cumulative power draw for whatever's plugged into it, reporting the data via an app. Some models also include a remote on/off switch, which is the actual savings mechanism — the monitoring alone is diagnostic, not corrective.
What We Found After a Month

Where the Real Savings Came From
Nearly all of the month's measurable savings came from one change: the entertainment center's phantom load, addressed with a $10 power strip and a switch — not the smart plug itself. The monitoring plug's real value was identifying which device was worth targeting; a much cheaper physical switch did the actual saving.
Verdict
Energy monitoring plugs are a genuinely useful diagnostic tool for a month or two to identify your home's biggest phantom-load offenders — after that, a simple switched power strip on the worst offender usually delivers the same ongoing savings for a fraction of the cost. Buy one or two to diagnose, not eight to permanently monitor everything.
