What HEPA Filters Actually Filter
HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters work by physically trapping particles in a dense mesh as air passes through — effective against dust, pollen, pet dander, and similar airborne particulates. This is genuinely useful for general nursery air quality and allergen reduction, but VOCs are gas molecules, not particles, and pass straight through a HEPA filter's mesh structure unaffected.
What Actually Removes VOCs: Activated Carbon
Activated carbon filters use a different mechanism — adsorption, where gas molecules chemically bind to the carbon's extremely porous surface as air passes through. This is the filter stage that actually addresses off-gassing from new furniture, paint, or synthetic materials. A purifier needs an activated carbon stage specifically, in addition to (not instead of) HEPA, to handle both particulates and VOCs.
Checking What You Actually Bought
Many budget air purifiers are HEPA-only, marketed with general "cleaner air" language that doesn't distinguish between particulate and gas filtration. If VOC off-gassing from new nursery furniture or a recent paint job is the specific concern, check the product spec sheet explicitly for "activated carbon" or "carbon filter" — HEPA-only models won't help with this particular issue, regardless of how effective they are at dust and allergens.

If general dust and allergen reduction is the goal, HEPA-only is fine.
