Solar power banks add real, noticeable weight to a travel bag in exchange for a charging method that's genuinely much slower than a wall outlet. We carried one on a 2-week trip mixing city stays and a few days of hiking to find out when that tradeoff is actually worth it.
The Real Charging Speed
Charging via the built-in solar panel alone took approximately 8-10 hours of direct, unobstructed sunlight for a full charge in our test — dramatically slower than the 2-3 hours a standard wall outlet takes. In practice, most solar power bank users primarily charge via USB/wall outlet and treat the solar panel as an emergency or backup feature, not a primary charging method.
When It's Genuinely Not Worth the Weight
For typical urban travel — hotels, cafes, airports, anywhere with regular outlet access — the extra weight isn't earning its keep. A standard (non-solar) power bank charges faster from any outlet you'll have regular access to anyway, at a lower weight and cost.
When It's Genuinely Worth It
Multi-day off-grid trips without reliable outlet access — hiking, camping, remote travel — are exactly the scenario a solar panel is built for. Even at the slow charging rate, "eventually charges from sunlight with zero outlet needed" is a real, meaningful capability when there's genuinely no outlet for days at a time.
Practical Notes From the Test
- Charging drops significantly under cloud cover, and stops almost entirely if the panel isn't in direct light — packed in a backpack, it generates negligible charge.
- Clip it to the outside of your bag while hiking to actually get meaningful charge throughout the day.
- Don't rely on it as your only charging method even on off-grid trips — bring it as backup alongside a standard power bank charged beforehand.
Verdict
Leave it home for city trips with normal outlet access — a standard power bank does the job faster and lighter. Pack it specifically for multi-day off-grid travel, where slow-but-outlet-free charging is a genuine capability rather than a novelty.
