"Trains are more eco-friendly than planes" is one of those claims repeated so often it starts to sound like a vague, feel-good generalization rather than something backed by hard numbers. It's actually one of the more solidly quantified comparisons in sustainable travel, and the gap is bigger than the casual version of the claim usually implies.
The Core Numbers
Aircraft produce approximately 285 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer. UK trains average around 41 grams per passenger-kilometer for the same distance — meaning the train's footprint is roughly one-seventh of the plane's for a comparable trip. Put another way, a domestic flight's per-kilometer footprint is dramatically higher than an equivalent train journey, not marginally so.
The Best Trains Do Even Better
Electrified, high-efficiency rail services push this gap further. Eurostar has been measured at roughly 4 to 6 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer — compared to around 154 grams for a comparable short-haul flight, putting Eurostar's footprint at somewhere around 4% of the equivalent flight's. This isn't representative of all train travel (diesel-powered regional lines perform less impressively), but it shows what's achievable with full electrification and efficient operation.
What This Looks Like Route by Route
On specific comparable routes, choosing the train over flying has been found to cut total emissions by around 90%. In the US specifically, rail was found to reduce emissions by 37% compared to a direct flight on certain routes — a smaller gap than the European electrified-rail comparison, reflecting a less electrified US rail network, but rising to 54% when compared against a one-stop connecting flight instead of a direct one, since each additional takeoff and landing adds a disproportionate amount of emissions relative to cruising flight.
Why Altitude Makes the Plane Comparison Even Worse
Emissions released at cruising altitude are estimated to cause between roughly 1.27 and 2.5 times more warming impact than the same amount of CO2 released at ground level, due to additional atmospheric effects at altitude. This means the raw CO2-per-kilometer numbers, stark as they already are, likely understate the plane's actual comparative climate impact somewhat.
Where This Actually Applies
The comparison is strongest on routes where a reasonably direct train option exists and travel time isn't wildly different — a multi-day train trip to avoid a 2-hour flight is a different calculation than choosing rail on a route where both options take a similar amount of time. Where a genuine train alternative exists, though, it's one of the largest, most reliably documented emissions reductions available in ordinary travel decisions.
