Solar exterior lighting has a real reputation problem left over from a decade ago, when solar path lights genuinely were too dim to be useful. That's changed significantly for some categories and not others — we tested 5 solar fixtures against wired equivalents to find the actual gap.
Path and Accent Lighting: The Gap Has Closed
Modern solar path lights commonly output 20-100 lumens, genuinely comparable to typical wired low-voltage landscape lighting in the same category. In our side-by-side test, most testers couldn't reliably tell which path lights were solar versus wired at night, in normal use.
Security/Floodlights: Still a Real Gap
Solar security and floodlight fixtures underperformed wired equivalents in our test on two dimensions: peak brightness, and — more significantly — reliability during winter months or extended cloudy stretches, since output depends entirely on the previous day's solar charge. A wired security light doesn't have that dependency.
Climate Matters More Than the Fixture

Verdict
Swap to solar confidently for path and accent lighting — the performance gap is genuinely closed for most households. For security lighting specifically, especially in northern or frequently cloudy climates, wired remains the more dependable choice unless you're comfortable with occasional winter underperformance.
