It's made from a genuine agricultural byproduct rather than a purpose-grown crop, which changes the sustainability math a little — but the odor-control question is separate from the sourcing question, and it's worth pulling the two apart.
What walnut shell litter actually is
Walnut shell litter is made from crushed and ground English walnut shells — the hard, fibrous outer casing left over after walnuts are processed for the nut meat. Most of the U.S. walnut crop comes out of California, and the shells have historically been a low-value byproduct used for things like industrial abrasives and blast media. Turning them into litter means the raw material is waste from an existing food crop rather than something grown specifically to become cat litter, which is a real point of difference from corn- or wheat-based litters that require their own dedicated acreage.
Like other plant-based clumping litters, walnut litter relies on natural starches and fibers in the shell material, usually combined with a plant-derived binder such as guar gum, to form solid clumps on contact with liquid.
Does the dark color actually control odor?
Walnut litter's natural color is dark brown to nearly black, and it's often marketed with the suggestion that this hides urine staining better than lighter litters. That's true as far as it goes, but it's a cosmetic effect, not an odor-control mechanism — color has no bearing on ammonia chemistry. The actual odor control in any plant-based litter comes from two things: how quickly and completely it clumps to isolate liquid waste from the surrounding litter (limiting the surface area where odor-causing bacteria can act), and the natural absorptive capacity of the fiber itself. Lower dust is a relative claim, not a zero-dust one — no widely used litter is completely dust-free.
The tradeoff nobody puts on the bag
The same dark color that's marketed as a urine-masking benefit works against you at scooping time: it's genuinely harder to spot clumps in a box full of near-black litter than in a box of light tan or white litter, which can lead to missed clumps sitting in the box longer than intended — working against the odor control the material is supposed to provide. Walnut shell litter tends to have a coarser, harder-edged granule than clay or the softer wood pellets used in some pine litters, and litter-box texture preference is a genuine behavioral factor in whether a cat will actually use a box consistently. Cost, availability, and flushability
Walnut shell litter is generally a specialty item rather than a supermarket staple — it's stocked less widely than clay or corn litter and tends to cost more per pound, though its clumping performance means a bag can last a comparable amount of time if scooping is consistent. It's also worth checking the packaging for a flushability claim rather than assuming one: unlike some corn or wheat litters that are explicitly marketed as flushable in small amounts, many walnut shell litters make no such claim, and pouring any clumping litter down a toilet without the manufacturer's explicit sign-off risks the same plumbing and septic problems covered elsewhere for other litter types.
So which one actually controls odor best?
There's no independent testing body that grades cat litters head-to-head on odor performance — odor control claims across brands are essentially all self-reported by manufacturers. In practice, odor performance in any plant-based litter, walnut included, depends more on scooping frequency and full changeouts than on which specific plant material is doing the absorbing. Walnut's genuine advantages are the byproduct sourcing story and generally lower dust than clay; it isn't a categorically better odor eliminator than pine, wheat, or corn litter, and the coarser texture and dark color are real tradeoffs worth testing with your own cat in small quantities before committing to a full bag.
