The caveat is real: quality varies widely across brands, and "silicone" on a label doesn't automatically mean it meets the food-grade standard — checking for actual certification is the part that separates a genuinely safe product from one just using the word.
Wood's Case: Inherently Chemical-Free, With a Sourcing Caveat
A properly finished wooden teether — using only natural oils or beeswax, no synthetic coatings — is genuinely free of the synthetic chemical concerns that apply to plastics generally, not because of a formulation choice but because of what the material fundamentally is. The tradeoff: wood is porous, which means it can harbor bacteria if it's not thoroughly dried between uses (soaking or leaving it wet is where problems start), and lower-quality wooden teethers, especially ones assembled from glued segments rather than a single solid piece, carry a real risk of splintering over time.
