It is a manufacturer claim based on meeting those FDA requirements. Platinum-cured silicone is what most pediatric feeding brands use because it cures without the byproducts that peroxide-cured silicone can leave behind, and it tends to hold its shape better after repeated heat cycles. A quick, informal check some parents use in the store is to twist or stretch the material slightly: higher-grade silicone tends to spring back cleanly, while silicone cut with fillers is more likely to leave a faint chalky residue on the surface. This is not a lab test, just a reasonable gut check.
Where Silicone Falls Short
Silicone flexes, which is exactly what makes it freezer-safe and easy to pop portions out of, but that same flexibility means lids can warp slightly after repeated heat cycles and stop sealing as tightly. Silicone also carries heat differently than glass, so a portion that feels only warm on the outside of a silicone container can still be scalding in the center. Checking the food itself with a spoon before serving matters more than checking the container's exterior temperature.
The Freezer-to-Microwave Cycle, Practically
For most households making their own purees, the lowest-friction setup is freezing in silicone trays, which handle cold well and pop portions out cleanly, then transferring the frozen cube into a glass container to thaw and reheat. This splits the job between what each material is actually good at, rather than asking one container to do everything. If you would rather use one material end to end, glass is the more conservative choice for anything reheated directly, since it removes the leaching question entirely. Silicone is the more practical choice if freezer space and easy portioning matter more to your routine than reheating in the same vessel.
What to Skip
Regardless of material, avoid microwaving with a lid fully sealed, since trapped steam is a real burn risk when it is opened. And do not treat a container labeled BPA-free plastic as if that settles the safety question; BPA-free plastic can still contain substitute bisphenols with less research behind them, which is a separate issue from the glass-versus-silicone question but worth knowing if a BPA-free tray is still part of your rotation.
