Grocery delivery markets itself as a convenience and, often implicitly, as a greener choice — skip the car trip, reduce emissions. But convenience and packaging are two different questions, and we wanted to actually look inside a delivery box rather than assume either claim.
What Was Actually in the Box
We ordered a standard mixed grocery delivery (produce, dairy, pantry staples, one frozen item) and catalogued every piece of packaging beyond the products' own labels:
- 1 outer cardboard shipping box
- 1 insulated liner (paper-based in this case; plastic-lined in some providers)
- 3 gel ice packs
- Packing paper to prevent items shifting
- Individual product packaging — largely identical to what the same items would have in-store
Compared to carrying the same items out of a store in reusable bags, the delivery order added a meaningful amount of packaging that exists purely to survive transit — none of it needed if you'd picked the items up yourself.
The Transport Side of the Equation
This is where delivery can genuinely win: a delivery van consolidating a route of 15-25 stops produces far less transport emissions per household than each of those households making a separate car trip. The math favors delivery specifically when:
- It replaces a trip you'd otherwise make in a car, alone, for groceries only
- You order less frequently in larger batches, rather than frequent small top-up orders
- The delivery route is genuinely consolidated (multiple households per route), not a dedicated single-order trip
The math favors in-person shopping when you'd combine the grocery run with other errands anyway (school pickup, gym, other stops), since delivery then adds packaging without actually removing a car trip from your day.
Packaging vs Transport: Which Matters More?

How to Reduce Delivery's Packaging Footprint
- Order less often, in larger batches: the packaging overhead (box, liner, ice packs) is roughly fixed per order regardless of size, so bigger, less frequent orders dilute that footprint.
- Check for ice pack/liner return programs: several providers now accept insulated liners and gel packs back for reuse on request — worth checking your specific service.
- Opt out of extra padding when possible: some services let you flag non-fragile orders to skip additional packing material.
Verdict
Neither option is universally better — it genuinely depends on your specific shopping pattern. If you're combining trips or live within easy reach of a store, in-person shopping (ideally with bulk bins and reusable containers) is the lower-waste choice. If delivery is consolidating what would otherwise be frequent solo car trips, it can be the better option despite the extra box.
